Fashion Trends I Can't Rock

Y'all. I have tried. I have seen these things on other girls and been like, "OMG I totally love that, so cute!" and then I try it on and it's like "WHOA girl. No." Overall I like my shape pretty well but it does not lend itself well to certain styles, and I have had to learn to accept that and move on with my life. It's fine.

You'll just have to trust me on these because there is no photographic evidence. Thankfully. Ok, well maybe there is but I'll never tell.

1. Very baggy/boxy shirts- I just need things that define my waist. And as much as I love the trend of really flowy voluminous shirts on other girls, anytime I try it I just look like I'm wearing a trash bag. When I do try this I always end up belting it and it kind of defeats the whole purpose. Plus they usually come to just above or right at my hips and that does not do me any favors.

2. Peplum- This one is BAD. But hope springs eternal and I just keep trying it on, thinking this time it will be different. It's so not. But it looks so cute on the hanger. I have decided that anything that adds volume to the hip area is a very bad idea on me.

I am so jealous of how fabulous she looks in this shirt. This is how I always imagine myself looking in peplum and then something goes horribly wrong.

3. 1/4 sleeves- I don't even know if that's the right name for it, but basically any shirt or sweater with sleeves that come about halfway between my shoulder and my elbow. It cuts my arm off at the biggest part and just makes them look super wide.

4. Bermuda shorts- Pretty much the same issue as the 1/4 sleeves. They hit my leg at a weird spot and cut me off and just...no.

5. High-waisted shorts- I'm talking the reeaaally high waisted ones- a la Kelly Kapowski- that are back in style now. They pretty much make my hips look twice as wide, and that's not good for anyone.

What about you? Can you rock these looks? What trends do you stay away from?

  1. I love Peplum, but the bermuda shorts and baggy shirts are a no-go for me.

  2. I'm with you - boxy stuff and just things that have no shape like shift dresses just dont work on my figure! xo, biana -BlovedBoston

  3. i like looser tops, but i can't wear super baggy / boxy ones for the same reason. and bermuda shorts -ugh no. i have tried them. it's hard because i have somewhat long legs, so normal shorts look like booty shorts on me, so in theory bermuda shorts should work, but they are too long and make my legs look like tree trunks. not cute! i need to find something in between. and girl i feel you on the peplum! i gave up on that a loooong time ago. aint gonna happen lol.

  4. What a good post and I am so with you I always see the pictures and think yes! then try on and it's so a no! Bermuda shorts/high wasted I seriously cannot do - peplum is hit or miss and I love the rare occasion that it's a hit.

  5. Haha, we can't pull off the bermuda shorts either! If only we looked as fabulous as she does in that peplum top.

  6. While the big shirts look soooo comfy, they don't look good on me either...I SO wish they did, haha!

  8. I can't rock any trendy look so I basically stopped. I wear t-shirt and jeans or yoga pants and that's it. I did just buy some maxi skirts and that's about as trendy as I get. I'm short, fat, and big chested. Nothing works for me.

  9. I can't wear any of this stuff either. I actually tried to wear a peplum top the other day, it's been in my closet for like a year and I was like 'ooooh I'll wear this"! I put it on and took it right off haha. I can't wear most things because my body is so weird shaped - really short, big boobs, flat butt, wide hips. so nothing ever fits right and it all looks awkward on me. like nothing cute and trendy is ever cute on me. thankfully, I love living most of my life in sweatpants and hoodies ;)

  10. I have the same problem with high-waisted anything! People with narrow hips don't know the struggle.

  11. I am with you on all of these!!! I can't find a single one of anything above to work for me. Well, excluding the high wasted shorts because I dont wear shorts and I am too old to wear that look anyways. Also, I can't wear maxi dresses or chambray tops. I would love too, but I am a weird height for maxi dresses and no button down top fits me right. My chest it too big to get something fitted anywhere else. Sigh.

  12. I love peplum but I don't think I could ever pull it off :(

  13. I don't like either of those shorts! Peplums surprisingly look good on my figure so I own quite a few but I know a lot of ladies that hate them! lol

  14. I am loving this post! I feel the same way about the oversized shirts... and same with shift dresses. Such a bummer! Love your blog, glad I found it! :)

  15. Bermuda shorts are so bad on me! I'm 5'7", so not short, buuut I'm pear shaped and I have short legs and a long torso...so they make me look like a hobbit.

  16. With you on so many of these! I'm way too short for bermuda shorts and loose tops totally make me feel like a trash bag. Haha.

  17. I hear ya girl! Shopping is so hard for me because of my height. Nothing EVER looks cute on me like it does on the rack. So frustrating!

  18. OMG, I am with you on all of these! Bermuda shorts make me look so stumpy. I don't like boxy shirts. I need more tailored pieces.

  19. Shorts are the devil-- I'm pretty sure. I also wish I could pull off that peplum-- I mean it looks sooooo good on her. All the jealous feelings!

  20. pretty much with you on all of the above. Especially peplum and bermuda shorts. I so wish i could wear peplum tops because they are so pretty!

  21. My comfiest shorts are bermudas and I don't care how they make me look, lol. I have a problem with the skirts that flare out; I love them, but NOT on me. :( I just call them short sleeve and while I'm not a fan I can't wear 3/4 or long sleeve all the time down here though I love me a good long sleeve shirt.

  22. I can't do the oversized shirts, either. I like my shirts to have some shape and fit. The sleeve length I actually like, though--I don't really like the really short, short sleeves.

  23. I can't do a peplum. Cannot do it. I wish I could but I just look like a goodball in that style. I like to stick to maxi skirts and tshirts in the summer!

  24. I love knowing what does and doesn't work for one's shape. It took me a long time to get mentally on board with that for myself and it is still so hard when there are things I want so badly to look good on me!

  25. It took me so long to realize what works for my shape and what doesn't. I'm with you on the boxy oversized t's. I have yet to see one person who looks flattering in them. I have very broad shoulders and narrow hips so I try and stay away from anything that makes me look bigger on top like padded or ruffled shoulders of anything too wide. They make me look like a line backer!

  26. I've never understood bermuda shorts/been a fan, and they look ridiculous on me! But I felt the same way about peplum for a while, and finally found a few peplum tops that worked on my figure. Try out F21 so you're not spending a lot, and can pick up one or two you want to try and spend less than $20 ;-)
